The Rotary Club of Beckenham

2009 marked the 75th Anniversary of the Club’s foundation by a group of local businessmen in 1934.
We meet every Thursday at lunchtime at the Park Langley Club.
Our membership has about 40 representatives of many local businesses and professions.

Members enjoy the fellowship of good company but have a serious purpose in becoming Rotarians. -

What is Rotary?

Rotary is short for Rotary International – a worldwide association of local Clubs for people in business or the professions who:

  • Provide service to the community at local, national and international levels
  • Encourage high ethical standards in all vocations
  • Work for goodwill and peace in the world

In Great Britain and Ireland there are 59,525 members in 1,824 Clubs in 29 Districts.

What do we do?

Vocational Service and Service to the Local Community

This is the well-known face of Rotary.  We help the aged, the handicapped, the infirm, young people and those in need.

    • We have organised sponsored events in support of local charities.
    • We help with fund raising for Harris HospiceCare and with sponsored walks for other local hospices
    • We support the Phoenix Centre in Bromley and CASPA a charity for autistic children through our street and supermarket collections at Christmas time
    • We arrange mock job interviews for young job seekers in conjunction with local schools to prepare them for the real thing.
    • We help with the coordination of the British Legion Poppy day collection in Beckenham
    • We support other local Rotary Clubs in their fund raising and community project activities.

Helping Internationally

  1. We support the Rotary International Foundation.  This distributes many millions of pounds every year to humanitarian projects worldwide

  2. Every year we fill shoe boxes with toys and gifts for distribution to children in Eastern Europe at Christmas

  3. We support the Rotary Emergency Box which provides essential requirements for a family of four who have lost everything through natural disasters or conflict

  4. We support the Water Aid scheme which provides potable water for those people without access to clean drinking water

  5. We have established links with a French Club in Douai.

  6. We have funded, together with Rotary International, the provision of sports equipment for a school in South Africa with implementation coordinated by a local Rotary Club in S Africa.
  7. We respond quickly to disasters like the tsunami and Haiti earthquakes

Where does the money come from?

In helping to promote all these activities, finance is often required. Apart from a requested annual contribution currently of £50, however members are not expected to fund charitable activities out of their own pockets.

The whole principle of Rotary is the concept of SERVICE by business and professional people who give their time and talents in support of community projects in the places where they work and/or live.

We do have an annual membership fee, currently £115 per member and you do have to pay for your weekly lunch, currently £14.00 for a three course meal at a pleasant venue with good company!  We hope you attend 60% of these.

Rotarians enjoy themselves and those in the Beckenham Club have a very well developed social life.

Outings, concerts, dinner dances and sporting events are just some of the things that help to add enjoyment to life.  We certainly have a serious purpose but above all we are a group of friends who enjoy one another’s company.

Our link with a French Club enables opportunities for exchange visits and joint events.
